This WordPress.com site all about kindergarten science.

Science in kindergarten?

This year we are scheduling a specific time for science every day.  I have spent a lot of time this summer coming up with science lessons that go along with our reading program.  I am unbelievably excited to spend so much time on science.  Some of the resources that I am using are http://www.nextgenscience.org/search-standards-dci?tid_1[]=6 for the kindergarten science standards and http://www.nextgenscience.org/search-standards-dci?tid_1[]=7 for the first grade standards.

The main topics covered by the science standards for kindergarten and first grade are

  • motion and stability
  • energy
  • from molecules to organisms
  • Earth’s systems
  • Earth and Human activity
  • Engineering design
  • waves
  • heredity
  • Earth’s place in the universe

I am interested in learning more about STEM.  (Science, technology, engineering and math)  Many schools use this in their teaching.  Currently my district has given me 45 minutes of science and 45 minutes of social studies to teach every day, but no lessons or materials to use.  That is why I am putting so much time into lesson planning in the summer.  If you have experience using STEM I would love to hear about  it!
